The day it all started…..

by Tony on Feb.13, 2008, under Cycling

As is usual for the doctor’s practice that I am under they sent for me on my birthday for my annual MOT, my checkover consisted of blood pressure check, blood sample and urine sample. 1 week later I had to return for my results. Suprisingly all my tests were normal including blood pressure and cholesterol. However what happened next was the rude awakening I needed, whilst obviously overweight I was mortified to hear that I was weighing in at 152.4kg or in old money a whopping 24st, at that moment I could see the huge abyss that I was fast falling into. The doctor told me that despite all my tests being normal, I was putting my health at serious risk and really it would only be a matter of time if I continued at this weight before I had a major health scare and that only I could do something about it, I was unlikely to see my children grow up, that day my life changed, I left the doctors and went straight to Halfords and bought a mountain bike, being the weight I was I had to buy something that would support my weight and opted for a Carrera Banshee X, for no other reason than it appeared heavy duty with thicker wheels and if I am honest looked like a bike made for bigger people! My cycling started that day, 5 miles to start, that 1st ride showed me how hard this battle was going to be, it took me 43 mins to complete that 1st 5 miles, I was gasping for air throughout the ride, hardly suprising as as my wife and children were always asking how come I was out of breath after going up the stairs, my lungs felt as though they were going to explode my legs were burning due to all the lactic acid, I was aching all over, but most painful was my backside and undercarriage they were red raw and bruised, 24 stone being supported on what felt like a razor blade as a seat was never going to be comfortable, surely that would come in time as the weight came off. Undetered I continued those 5 mile rides come rain, shine and even snow at times, my driving force being that I had to give myself the best opportunity to see my children grow up. The journey had begun….
